The Antarctic Sound contained icebergs and volcanic islands. The sight of steam rising from the cone of a volcanic island with icebergs floating in the distance demonstrated the kinds of incongruities that Antarctica provided. The angular light and broken clouds caused the light to play on the ice sheets of the islands.
