Shikotsu-Toya National Park is located in the southern portion of Hokkaido, Japan. This park is one of the four national parks that we visited on our fall trip to Hokkaido. This national park is a land of volcanoes, beautiful mountain lakes, and spectacular fall foliage. It was at this national park that I discovered the notion of "Wilderness Without Boundaries" -- the idea that wilderness cousciousness should extend beyond the boundaries of the national park. This idea came about because it was very difficult to determine where the national park ended and the private land began.
